Davidson walks away with sweep over Spartans, 5-4
DAVIDSON, NC – Pat Brady drew a 10-pitch walk in the bottom of the 11th inning to walk home Drew Gadaire as Davidson completed the sweep over UNC Greensboro, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Davidson reliever Ryan Overcash picked up his first win of the season for the Wildcats (17-21, 11-10 SoCon) after pitching the 10th and 11th innings.
Blake Hassebrock was credited with his first loss of the season for UNCG (15-22, 4-15 SoCon) after giving up two runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
The Spartans were able to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Pedro Leon led off the inning with a single through the left side. After stealing second, Leon advanced to third on a Raymond Frias' infield single to the shortstop. Leon later scored on Michael Wall's groundout to the second baseman to put UNCG ahead, 1-0.
UNCG was able to extend its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning. With two down in the inning, Kris Richards reached base on an error by the Davidson second baseman. Brent O'Berry followed with a double down the right field line that the right fielder let slip under his glove for an error to allow Richards to score from first.
The Wildcats were able to cut UNCG's lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Drew Gadaire led off the inning with a walk and Danny Weiss followed with a single through the left side of the infield. After the Spartans recorded back-to-back strikeouts, James Cerbie hit a chopper through the left side to score Gadaire and narrow the Spartan lead to 2-1.
The Spartans immediately got that run back in the top of the seventh to go ahead 3-1. Eric Temple led off the inning with a bloop single to right field before stealing second. Temple moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Richards and then scored on a sacrifice fly by O'Berry to deep left field.
In what appeared to be déjà vu from Saturday, the Spartans allowed a late home run to give up the lead. Brett Shore led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single down the first base line. Graham Chapman followed with a line drive that hit the top of the left field wall and fell over to tie the game at 3-3.
After reliever Blake Hassebrock struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th, the Spartans were able to manufacture a run in the top of the 11th to go ahead 4-3. Trevor Edwards led off the inning with a single up the middle before Drew Gehringer came in to pinch run for him. Gehringer subsequently stole second before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Frederick. Joey Frabasile then came up and hit a fly ball just deep enough to center field to allow Gehringer to tag up and score from third.
Shore led off the bottom half of the 11th inning with a single to left field and Chapman then fouled out to the catcher on a bunt attempt. Shore moved to second on a wild pitch and Kayne then walked to put runners on first and second. Drew Gadaire then reached on a fielder's choice when he hit a ground ball to the third baseman Richards who stepped on third for the second out of the inning. Weiss followed with a single to center field to score Kayne from second. Chase FitzPatrick was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Pat Brady drew a 10-pitch walk to score Gadaire and give Davidson the 5-4 win.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday evening as UNCG hosts cross-town rival North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
