Spartans kick off fall practice
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Head coach Mike Gaski and the UNC Greensboro baseball team recently kicked off fall practice as the Spartans start looking ahead towards the 2010 campaign in the spring.
The team began holding afternoon practices as of late that will extend through Oct. 7. Practices usually begin at 2:30 p.m. and the team encourages fans to come out to the practices, as they are open to the public. Also, every few days the team will hold an intrasquad scrimmage to wrap up practice.
Gaski is excited about returning many of the core players from last year's squad, as well as a wealth of promising newcomers. Senior Corey Overholtzer, a preseason All-Southern Conference pick a year ago, hit .299 last year and will lead the Spartans in the outfield. Fellow senior Ed Jayjack returns this season after hitting a team-high .343 last season before suffering a season-ending injury two-thirds of the way through the season. Warren Slack also returns for the Spartans after going 4-0 with a 3.77 ERA, which was the third-best ERA in the Southern Conference last season.
Lloyd Enzor and Cody Poarch are just two of the newcomers who will look to have any impact early in their Spartan careers. As a first baseman, Enzor comes from Southeastern Community College, where he had an incredible .546 batting average with 10 home runs. Poarch, a right-handed pitcher, comes from South Caldwell High School, where he helped lead his team to the 2007 4-A state championship.
