BUENA VISTA, Fla. – UNCG junior right-handed pitcher Jarett Miller was selected on Tuesday as part of the second day of selections in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Miller was drafted in the 21st round by the Atlanta Braves with the 656th overall pick. On Monday, the first round took place with 60 picks being made on the first day. The draft picked up on Tuesday at noon with rounds 2-30 taking place via conference call from the MLB Headquarters in New York. Rounds 31-50 will conclude the draft on Wednesday starting at 12 p.m.
It marked the 15th time in the past 16 years that at least one UNCG player has been drafted. He is also the 13th pitcher in the past 15 seasons to be drafted.
"Obviously, today is an exciting day for me," Miller said. "I have to thank my coaches and teammates for their support to help me receive this opportunity."
After transferring to UNCG at the beginning of the year from USC Lancaster, Miller went 4-2 for the Spartans with a 4.01 ERA. He also added three saves and was a part of two shutouts.
He appeared in 28 games this season, making a start in four of those, as he pitched a total of 60 2/3 innings. He struck out 66 batters in those innings and only yielded 38 walks. Batters also hit just .227 off of him this year.
Perhaps his best appearance of the season came in the final weekend of the regular season against Wofford. Miller came into the game in the seventh inning to protect a 1-0 lead and pitched a flawless three innings, striking out seven of the nine batters he faced.
Miller will have until Aug. 15 to decide whether to sign a professional contract or return to UNCG for his senior season.
