GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team will play 32 games at home, including 19 of the first 21, as part of its 2013 schedule released in its entirety Wednesday by school officials. The Spartans will also face cross-town rival North Carolina A&T March 28 at Newbridge Bank Park – home of the South Atlantic League's Greensboro Grasshoppers.
The schedule features 11 contests against teams that qualified for the NCAA Regionals in 2012, including NC State which advanced to a Super Regional. Samford was selected to the Tallahassee Regional while College of Charleston, East Carolina and defending SoCon champion Appalachian State participated in the Atlanta, Chapel Hill and Charlottesville Regionals respectively.
"The schedule sets up well for our team this year," head coach Link Jarrett said. "We are playing five teams that qualified for a NCAA regional last season and have nine different leagues represented in nonconference play. One of our goals is to provide Spartan fans with high quality, exciting baseball to watch and our schedule goes a long way in doing that."
UNCG opens the year Feb. 15-17 with a series against Army before welcoming UNC Asheville to the UNCG Baseball Stadium Feb. 19 for its first midweek game of the season. The homestand continues Feb. 22-24 as the Spartans entertain Dayton. UNCG will also host Albany (March 1-3) and Marist (March 8-10) for three-game series while taking on Lehigh (March 12) and Rhode Island (March 13) in midweek tilts. A trip to East Carolina (March 5) serves as the lone road game during the season-opening stretch before UNCG opens SoCon play at home March 15-17 against Elon.
After beginning league play, the Spartans will head to ACC power NC State (March 19) then return home the next day to battle Princeton. UNCG travels out of the state for the first time March 22-24, squaring off with Wofford. The Spartans will then return to the UNCG Baseball Stadium for five games, including a three-game set with league foe Georgia Southern (March 28-30).
April begins with the Spartans hosting North Carolina Central on the first day of the month before making the short trek to Winston-Salem a day later to battle Wake Forest. In terms of league play, UNCG travels to College of Charleston (April 5-7) and Davidson (April 19-21) while hosting Appalachian State (April 12-14) and Western Carolina (April 26-28). The Spartans also play at Duke (April 9) and host the Demon Deacons (April 16) and Aggies (April 30).
UNCG wraps up the regular season in the first part of May, taking road trips to Samford (May 3-5) and Furman (May 10-12) and welcoming The Citadel (May 16-18) to Greensboro for the final series of conference play. The Spartans will also close their season series against Duke (May 14) with a game at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
