Kyle Hines named SoCon Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro senior forward Kyle Hines was named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday for his outstanding play in UNCG’s first three games of the season.
Hines averaged 18.7 points and eight rebounds in UNCG’s 2-1 start to the season. The 6-6 forward from Sicklerville, NJ began the season with a 25-point, nine-rebound effort as the Spartans knocked off Georgia Tech in Atlanta, 83-74. The All-America candidate and reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year earned Midmajority.com’s Player of the Week and Dick Vitale’s National Player of the Week honors for that performance. He shot 10-for-12 from the floor in that game. It was UNCG’s first-ever win over an ACC opponent.
He followed that up with his 32nd career double-double against UT-Pan American last Friday. The active leader nationally in double-doubles, Hines had 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 70-54 win over the Broncs.
He became UNCG’s all-time leading scorer in the Spartans’ last outing, a 79-52 loss at Missouri State. Hines now has 1,647 points in his career. He is on pace to become the 96th player in college basketball history to record 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Currently, he has the nation’s longest double-figure scoring streak at 53 consecutive games and is in the Top 5 among active players in points, rebounds and blocked shots.
It is Hines’ third career Player of the Week honor. He has won four out of nine possible Player of the Month awards in his career.
UNCG will play its home opener on Saturday when they face USC Upstate at Fleming Gym. Game time is set for 7 pm.
