Corey Gipson promoted to associate head coach
GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro men's basketball coach Mike Dement announced Tuesday the promotion of Corey Gipson to the position of associate head coach.
Gipson came to UNCG as an assistant coach last summer and is being promoted into the slot vacated by Rod Jensen when he was named the head coach at the College of Idaho.
Gipson earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Austin Peay State University, earning the first in 2004 and completing his graduate work in 2005. He also earned an associate's degree from Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Mo., before transferring to Austin Peay.
Gipson spent four seasons on the staff at Division II Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va. As a player at Austin Peay, Gipson was a two-year starter at point guard, helping the Govs in becoming the top defensive team in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2002-03 and 2003-04. The Govs went 45-18 in his two seasons, including a perfect 27-0 mark at home.
"With Rod getting the College of Idaho position, it opens up an opportunity to move Corey into the associate head coach position - which I think he will be very valuable in. Corey was a very successful college player and he has brought that knowledge to the floor. He does an excellent job of communicating the game to our players. Corey has shown a strong commitment to teaching student-athletes not only the game, but also the importance of their academic responsibilities. He serves as a valuable mentor to many of our players.
"Corey also had an integral part in the recruiting of this incoming class of six talented players that will be with us in the fall. He has valuable contacts across the country and in this region - high school, prep, and junior college coaches and players. Corey will work closely with our forwards on a daily basis and continue to be responsible for our overall recruiting plans. I am happy to be able to promote Corey to this position."
The Spartans anticipate an announcement to fill their remaining assistant coaching slot within the next 10 days.
