UNCG men third, women seventh in SoCon all-sports races
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG's men are in third and women are in seventh after the winter season of competition in the Southern Conference's all-sports races.
The Commissioner's Cup and Germann Cup are awarded annually to the Southern Conference schools fielding the league's best all-around men's and women's sports programs, respectively. Schools earn points based upon their regular-season finishes, with two bonus points going to the teams that win the conference tournaments for their respective sports.
The Spartans men held steady in third, the same spot they occupied after the fall. UNCG now has accumulated 40 points toward the Commissioner's Cup, 6.5 behind second-place Davidson and 14 behind first-place Appalachian State, which moved up a spot since the fall. UNCG's winter total includes results from basketball and indoor track and field. The Spartans won their first-ever outright North Division title in men's basketball this season and finished eighth in the indoor track and field championships.
The fall results included UNCG's results in soccer and cross country. The Spartans won the regular-season men's soccer title and the cross country championship.
UNCG's women are in seventh place in the race for the Germann Cup with 34.5 points after the fall and winter seasons. The Spartans finished seventh at the indoor track and field championships and 11th in women's basketball this winter. UNCG is just 1.5 points behind sixth-place Western Carolina and a mere five back of fourth-place Furman. Samford sits atop the standings with 52.5 points.
In the fall, the Spartans won the cross country championship, tied for second in the league in women's soccer and finished in a tie for fourth in the SoCon's North Division in volleyball.
The Commissioner's Cup was introduced in 1970 and the Germann Cup was first awarded in 1987. The latter is named after Ken Germann, who served as commissioner of the Southern Conference from 1974-86 and spearheaded the effort to introduce women's athletics to the league.
