GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's basketball team travels across the state of North Carolina Wednesday night as the Spartans face UNCW at 7 p.m. at Trask Coliseum. The game will be radio broadcast on 1320 WCOG AM and online at www.uncgspartans.com with Scott Pryzwansky providing the call. Additionally, the game will be video streamed online by UNCW for a $4.95 fee with a link at www.uncgspartans.com.
Wednesday's game marks the fifth meeting all-time between the two in-state schools with the Spartans lead the all-time series by a 3-1 margin. UNCG has won three straight in the series, including a 72-55 victory Dec. 29, 2007 in Wilmington in the last meeting between the teams. The Spartans also picked up wins in 2006-07 and the 1991-92 season while dropping the first-ever meeting between the teams in the 1990-91 season.
The Spartans enter the game with a 2-6 record on the season after suffering an 85-73 loss at James Madison Sunday afternoon. Junior guard Trevis Simpson (Douglas, Ga./Coffee) led the way with a game-high 24 points while sophomore Nicholas Paulos (Salt Lake City, Utah/New Hampton School) added 15 points off the bench as he hit 5-of-6 three-pointers.
Simpson leads the team and the Southern Conference in scoring as he averages 19.9 points per game and has scored in double figures all eight games this season with three games of 20-plus points. Senior guard Derrell Armstrong (Mechanicsville, Md./Allegany) is second on the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game, all as a reserve, and is second on the team with 14 three-pointers. Paulos is third on the team with 13 three-pointers while shooting 43.3 percent from long range.
Senior forward Kelvin McNeil (Newport News, Va./Delaware) leads the team on the glass as he averages 7.6 rebounds per game. The Spartans are out-rebounding opponents by a 40.6-34.6 margin the season, which is the top mark in the SoCon. Five different players average at least four rebounds per game with freshman Kayel Locke (Owings Mill, Md./McDonogh) second on the team at 5.0 boards per game.
UNCW enters Wednesday's game with a 4-6 overall record and a 4-0 mark at home this season. The Seahawks have picked up victories over UNC Asheville, Wofford, Hampton and Coker while dropping games to Richmond, Ohio, Purdue, Marshall, Georgia Tech and most recently Davidson.
Keith Rendleman leads the team and is the only Seahawk averaging 15.3 points per game while also grabbing 9.3 rebounds per game. Rendleman is shooting 51.8 percent (59-of-114) from the field while also leading the team with 20 steals. Tanner Milson is second on the team in scoring at 8.9 points per game and leads the team with 15 three-pointers and 24 assists.
