GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's basketball junior guard Trevis Simpson (Douglas, Ga./Coffee) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week. This is Simpson's first weekly award this season and the second honor of his career (Feb. 14, 2012).
Simpson led the Spartans to a 2-0 record in Southern Conference play this past week with wins over North Division leading Samford and Chattanooga as he averaged 35.5 points per game. He connected on 50 percent (23-of-46) from the field, 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from three-point land and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free throw line in the two victories. He became the first player in the SoCon this season to post back-to-back games of at least 30 points and owns two of the top three scoring performances this season in the league.
Simpson opened the week with a then season-high 30 points against division-leading Samford. He scored 22 of the Spartans' 27 second half points, including their final 14 points of the game to lead UNCG to a 66-64 victory. He connected on 9-of-21 from the field and hit 10-of-12 from the free throw line against the Bulldogs while also grabbing five rebounds.
Simpson out-did that effort with one of the top performances in school history Sunday as he tied the UNCG single-game scoring record with a career-high 41 points against Chattanooga. His 41 points are the most for a Spartan in the NCAA Division I era and the third highest total this season by any player in NCAA Division I. He scored the Spartans first nine points of the game on his way to 27 first half points.
Simpson tied the record with back-to-back baskets in the final minute as the game still hung in the balance. He connected on 14-of-25 from the field, including hitting 7-of-13 from three-point land and 6-of-9 from the free throw line. His scoring efforts on the week raised his SoCon-leading scoring total to 19.9 points per game this season.
Simpson and the Spartans return to action Thursday night for a pivotal SoCon game as they welcome Triad rival Elon to the Greensboro Coliseum. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
