UNCG finishes sixth at 2005 Mid Pines Intercollegiate
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Charlotte shot a third-round 278 to come from behind and win the 2005 Mid Pines Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament by one stroke over Lamar University on Tuesday afternoon.
Chad Cocco of St. Mary’s (CA) won the individual crown with a tournament total 12-under-par 206. After tying a tournament record for lowest second round score with a 66 on Monday afternoon, Cocco fired a 69 on Tuesday to earn medialist honors by one stroke over Lamar’s Dawie VanDerWalt.
Tournament host UNC Greensboro finished tied for sixth in the team standings. The Spartans, who had been fifth after each of the first two rounds on Monday, struggled on Tuesday to a team score of 289 to tie with Wichita State. J.D. Bass was UNCG’s top finisher, firing a three-under par 215 for the tournament. Defending tournament champion Nathan Stamey finished tied for 40th with a one-over 219.
Cocco had two eagles and 15 birdies over the three rounds to record his 206, which tied for the third lowest tournament score in the five-year history.
East Carolina’s Phillip Reale, II set a third-round record in making a late charge that fell short. He fired a final-round tournament record 65 on Tuesday, finishing three shots behind Cocco in a tie for fifth place. His 65 was also the lowest round ever recorded by an East Carolina player.
Charlotte’s tournament total 842 was the third lowest total in the five-year history of the Mid Pines Intercollegiate. Lamar’s 843, which one shot short of winning the total, was the fourth lowest total and would have been good enough to win the Mid Pines in three of the previous four years.
