Bass seventh, Spartans seventh after first round at SoCon

FLORENCE, S.C. – J.D. Bass fired even-par 72 on Sunday to lead UNCG on the opening day of the 2007 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina.

UNCG shot 300 as a team in the opening round to sit in seventh place after the opening round. The Spartans are seven shots behind first round leader Chattanooga, which used four players in the Individual Top 20 to shoot a 293 and grab the opening round lead. Wofford is second at 295, followed by Georgia Southern and Western Carolina at 296.

Bass, a senior from Fairview, NC, is tied for seventh in the individual standings, four shots off the pace. Bass has been UNCG’s most consistent golfer, finishing in the Top 20 in six straight tournaments.

Wofford’s Garrett Medeiros sits atop the individual leaderboard after the opening round, carding a 68 on Sunday. Appalachian State’s Taylor Hines is second, one shot back of Medeiros. UNCG’s Nathan Stamey is also sitting in the individual Top 20 after the first round, shooting a 74 on Sunday.
