Bass misses on NCAA Tournament field
GREENSBORO, NC – And with the decision of an NCAA selection committee, J.D. Bass’ collegiate career was not extended.
UNC Greensboro’s Bass was not among the 18 at-large selections for the 2007 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. The individual champion at the Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship three weeks ago, Bass was hoping to make the tournament field as an at-large selection.
“We thought he had a shot, but we were realistic that he was on the bubble,” said UNCG men’s golf coach Terrance Stewart. “At-large selections are fragile. You don’t know who those 81 teams are going to be. Then you are left figuring out who the at-large bids might be from the teams left over. But, we thought he might be in the the third or fourth slot, geographically. Thus, he’d be right there. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out at the end of a tremendous season for J.D.”
Bass, a senior from Fairview, NC, had a streak of seven straight Top 20 finishes, capped off by his win at the Southern Conference Championship. It was his eighth Top 20 finish this season and made him just the fourth Spartan to win a conference championship in the last 30 years. He earned All-Southern Conference honors, capping off a career with 17 Top 20 finishes.
