UNCG tied for eighth after two rounds at Mid Pines
PINEHURST, N.C. – Wichita State’s Ryan Spears recorded one of the more remarkable turnarounds in tournament history when he shot a second round 63 to set a tournament record, but it was Wofford’s Neil O’Briain who grabbed the lead after two rounds at the 2006 Mid Pines Men’s Golf Intercollegiate hosted by UNC Greensboro.
Tournament host UNC Greensboro is tied for eighth in the team standings, led by J.D. Bass’ three-under par. Bass shot a 69 in the morning and was even-par 72 in the afternoon. He is tied for 11th in the individual standings.
O’Briain fired a 67 in the morning and 65 in the afternoon to finish the day 12-under par and hold a six-shot lead over Spears and Shocker teammate Ty Sanders.
Sanders and Spears paced the Shockers to the top of the team leader board. Wichita State shot a two-round total of 560 to hold a two-shot lead over Wisconsin and three-shot margin over Old Dominion entering Tuesday morning’s final round.
Spears, however, had the round of the day. After recording a 75 in the morning’s opening round, he went out in the afternoon and shot 31 on the front and 32 on the backside. He had seven birdies and an eagle, that coming on the 484-yard par 5, to break the record set by California’s Jeff Hood in 2003. The nine-under par 63 was one shot off of the Mid Pines course record.
The final round gets underway Tuesday morning at 8:45 am.
