Stamey finishes second, UNCG fourth at SoCon Men's Golf Tourney
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Senior Nathan Stamey wound up in a tie for second and UNC Greensboro finished as a team in tie for fourth as play concluded at the 2008 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship on Tuesday at the Country Club of South Carolina.
Stamey, a native of Canton, NC, carded a 73 for the second consecutive day on Tuesday to finish four strokes off the pace in a tie for second place. Western Carolina’s Matt Cook completed his rally to win the individual title. Cook shot a 75 in Sunday’s opening round, but came back to record rounds of 67 and 69 to close it out.
Stamey, who finished with a 54-hole total of 215, had 13 pars to go with two birdies and three bogeys in Tuesday’s round. With the exception of a hiccup when he had consecutive bogeys at Nos. 8 and 9, Stamey kept the pressure on Cook and Chattanooga’s Ben Rickett, who also finished the tournament at 215. They were the only three golfers in the 44-player field to finish the tournament under par.
Chattanooga won the team title with a score of 865, eight shots better than College of Charleston, Western Carolina was third, while Furman and UNCG tied for fourth at 889.
UNCG will wrap up its season this Saturday and Sunday at the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, VA.
