Stamey's second round 70 leads Spartans at Coca-Cola Duke Classic

DURHAM, N.C. – UNC Greensboro’s Nathan Stamey sits at even par and the Spartans are 13th after two rounds at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic at The Duke Golf Club.

Stamey, a senior from Canton, NC, shot rounds of 74 and 70 on Sunday to sit at even par and tie with 13 other golfers for 23rd place after two rounds. In the morning, Stamey made 13 pars, two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on his way to 74. The afternoon, however, was more adventurous. Stamey had five birdies and an eagle – on the par-5 ninth hole – in his second round. But he also had five bogeys and just seven pars in that second 18 to finish with a 70.

Teammate Drew Younts shot a pair of 74’s on Sunday to sit at four-over par and in a tie for 50th place. As a team, UNCG shot rounds of 296 and 295 on Sunday. John Isenhour shot UNCG’s low round of the morning, carding a 73, but came back in the afternoon to shoot 82.

Tournament host Duke rallied late to take a two-shot lead after two rounds. The Blue Devils carded a 273 in the afternoon to overtake a red-hot Chattanooga squad and hold a two-stroke lead going into Monday’s final round. Chattanooga’s Jonathan Hodge and Duke’s Michael Schachner are tied for the individual lead at seven-under 137. Hodge led after the morning round produced a 67, but Schachner stormed back from 14th place in the afternoon with a 66 to forge a tie.

Monday’s final round gets underway with tee times on Nos. 1 and 10 starting at 7:45 am. UNCG will begin teeing off No. 10 at 7:54 am.
