Louisville wins UNCG Bridgestone; UNCG finishes 13th

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Derek Fathauer shot a 68 on Tuesday to set a 54-hole tournament record at 206, breaking his own record, and recorded his second individual title at Forest Oaks to lead Louisville to the 2007 UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate Championship title.

Fathauer, who helped Louisville to the title at the inaugural event in the spring of 2005, finished the tournament at 10-under. He had six birdies and two bogeys on Tuesday to card his 68 and win the title. He was one of three Cardinals to record rounds in the 60s on Tuesday, joining Adam Hadwin and Johnny Delpietre who both shot 69 on Tuesday. Hadwin had set a tournament record with a 65 in Monday afternoon’s second round.

With the course in perfect condition after heavy rain last week followed by three days of light breeze and sunshine, the teams tour up the PGA track at Forest Oaks Country Club. Nine players recorded rounds in the 60s on Tuesday and the average score was just a shade above one-over at 73.35. 

Mississippi State broke the 18-hole team scoring record on Tuesday with a 277. Louisville and Central Florida both shot 279 on Tuesday, which were still better than the old record of 281 that Louisville tied in Monday’s second round.

North Carolina, the leader entering Tuesday’s action, shot a 290 on Tuesday to finish fourth.

The tournament featured eight of the Top 40 ranked teams according to last week’s Golfstat rankings

Tournament host UNCG finished 13th after carding a 294 on Tuesday. Senior Nathan Stamey shot even-par on Tuesday to finish tied for seventh at two-under 214.

Greensboro, NC native Josh Sandman struggled on Tuesday and wound up in 15th place. Notre Dame’s top golfer, shot a 77 on his home course Tuesday. He bogeyed four of the first six holes of the day, but held fast most of the rest of the way.

Kent State’s Brett Cairns finished second in the individual scoring at 211. Central Florida’s Greg Forest made a late charge with a 66 on Tuesday, coming back from 16th place to finish third at three-under 212.

The tournament is one of two that is held annually on a course that is part of the PGA schedule. Forest Oaks Country Club is the host of the Wyndham Championship each year. This was the first year that UNCG’s tournament was held in the fall to coincide with the Wyndham’s move to August last year.
