Almand leads UNCG in season opener

COLUMBIA, MD – Will Almand, a freshman from Cary, NC playing in his first collegiate tournament, fired rounds of 72 and 71 on Saturday to help UNCG to a 10t h place finish at the season-opening Maryland Intercollegiate at River Marsh GC.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes, all to be played Sunday, after Tropical Storm Hanna washed out Saturday’s scheduled two rounds.

Arkansas won the team title with identical rounds of 272, outdistancing North Carolina State by 20 shots for the win. North Carolina State was second at 564, followed by VCU at 565, followed by North Carolina at 574. UNCG finished at 586.

Will Bowman finished 24th for UNCG, shooting rounds of 70 and 74.

The Spartans return to action on September 26, beginning play at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate.
