UNCG finishes fifth, Duke wins 2008 UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate

FOREST OAKS, N.C. – Duke University shot a final round 289 to rally for a four-shot win over Michigan State at the 2008 UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate at Forest Oaks Country Club.

The Blue Devils overcame a five-shot deficit and overtook Michigan on the final day for the win. Duke finished at 869, followed by Michigan State at 873. The Wolverines finished third at 874. Louisville, the defending champion and winner of two of the three previous team titles, finished fourth. Tournament host UNCG was fifth at 888.

Payne Gniewek of Michigan State and Max Scorodo of Notre Dame tied for the individual lead. Both players finished at 213 for the 54-hole tournament, three-under par. Due to travel considerations, a playoff was not held and the duo were declared co-champions. Michigan’s Bill Rankin, who set a tournament record with a second round score of 64 on Monday, finished third, one shot off the pace. UNCG’s Drew Younts had the best score of the day in brutal conditions. Battling wind gusts up over 30 miles per hour all day long, Younts carded a 70 for the second-straight round and finished tied for fourth at even-par 216.

Seven teams – Louisville, Mississippi State, Duke, Michigan State, Memphis, Michigan and Purdue – were participants in the NCAA Tournament last spring. Currently, Michigan is ranked No. 25 in the Golf World/Nike Coaches Poll with Duke close behind as the first team in the others receiving votes category. Michigan State, Pepperdine, Louisville, Mississippi State are also currently receiving votes in the Nike Poll. According to the Golfstat rankings (based on final place in tournaments), Pepperdine (28), Michigan State (34), Minnesota (35), Duke (37), Michigan (41), Louisville (42) and Mississippi State (45) are all ranked in the Top 50 currently.

The top-ranked individuals playing in the tournament according to Golfstat included Pepperdine’s Andrew Putman (77th) and Louisville’s Adam Hadwin (93). Hadwin tied for ninth and Putnam tied for 19th.

The event closed out the fall portion of UNCG’s schedule. The Spartans open the spring portion of their slate February 23 at the Rio Pinar Intercollegiate.
