Hoadley falls in second round at North & South, two eliminated in qualifying
PINEHURST, N.C. – UNC Greensboro incoming freshman Robert Hoadley made the cut to match play and pulled off one of four major upsets in the opening round Wednesday, before falling on Thursday in the second round at the North & South Men's Amateur Championship.
Hoadley fired a qualifying round score of 73 to make the cut by one shot and earn the No. 59 seed in a 64-man match-play bracket. The nearby-Southern Pines, N.C. native then promptly knocked out the No. 6 seed George Bryan, 1-up. With the match all square through 15, Hoadley birdied No. 16 and Bryan shot par on the hole to give Hoadley the lead. Hoadley, however, bogeyed at No. 17 to draw the match back to even. But Hoadley shot par on No. 18 and Bryan bogeyed it to give Hoadley a berth into Thursday's second round.
Thursday morning, however, Hoadley's fortunes were not as good. He fell behind early in his match against David McAndrew. The No. 27-seeded McAndrew won five of the first six holes to put Hoadley in a deep hole. Hoadley got back to down three as they made the turn onto the back side of the course. But McAndrew birdied No. 10 and Hoadley didn't recover from there.
UNCG's Will Almand was knocked out of the tournament in an 11-man playoff at the conclusion of qualifying play. He never really recovered from a three-over start with a bogey on No. 1 and a double-bogey on No. 2, shooting three-over par 74. The winner of the playoff, Andrew Loupe, made the best of his opportunity, winning his opening round match over No. 1 seed and defending champion Matt Savage, 5 & 4.
Ryan Heisey also missed the cut to 64, shooting a four-over 75 in the qualifying stage.
