UNCG's Hoadley sixth after opening round at Public Links Championship
NORMAN, Okla. – UNC Greensboro incoming freshman Robert Hoadley fired an opening round 69 to sit in a tie for sixth at the 84th USGA Amateur Public Links Champions at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
In the first of two rounds of stroke play, Hoadley went out and promptly birdied the first two holes of the day, having teed off at No. 10. He ran off seven straight pars before a bogey at No. 1. He then put together five more consecutive pars before a birdie at No. 7 and two more pars to close the round at 69.
Canadian Nick Taylor fired an opening round 66 to hold the lead. Taylor, who recently tied for 36th and was the low amateur at the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park, arrived in Norman fresh off avictory one week ago at the Sahalee Players Championship – a prestigious amateur event held at the site of the 2010 U.S. Senior Open, Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash. The University of Washington senior kept his remarkable summer going at the Amateur Public Links with a six birdie, one bogey effort that included a 4-under-par 31 on his second nine.
Fourteen players out of 155 qualifiers carded sub-par rounds on Monday. The top 64 players will advance to match play as of now, that cut sits at three-over par.
Defending champion Jack Newman, 21, of Des Moines, Iowa, shot a 7-over-par 78. He finished tied for 39th in the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill., on Sunday and then drove through the night to arrive in Norman, Okla., in time to begin his first round as the defending champion of the U.S. Amateur Public Links.
Hoadley, a native of Southern Pines, N.C. who won his local qualifier to gain entry in the tournament, will tee it up at 8:13 am central time on Tuesday in his effort to move into Wednesday's field of 64.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links, established in 1922 for bona fide public course players, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The APL is open to amateur golfers who have been bona fide public course players since Jan. 1 of the current championship year and have not held privileges of any course that does not extend playing privileges to the general public or privileges of any private club maintaining its own course and hold a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 4.4.
The 2010 APL Championship will be played at Bryan Park's Champions Course.
