Hoadley eliminated in first round of match play at APL

Norman, Okla. – UNC Greensboro incoming freshman Robert Hoadley lost in the opening round of the match play phase at the 84th USGA's Amateur Public Links championship on Wednesday.

After qualifying for the field of 64 through two rounds of stroke play, Hoadley lost to Sean Maekawa 4 and 3 in the opening round of match play. Maekawa, who will be a junior at University of Washington next season, took the lead of the day on the fourth hole when Hoadley bogeyed the 464-yard par 4. Maekawa went up three after seven holes when he made par on No. 6 and 7 while Hoadley bogeyed both holes.

A bogey by Maekawa on No. 9 brought Hoadley back within two holes at the turn. Hoadley, a native of Southern Pines, N.C., couldn't get closer than that, however, and Maekawa closed out the match with wins at holes Nos. 14 and 15.

The U.S. Amateur Public Links, established in 1922 for bona fide public course players, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The APL is open to amateur golfers who have been bona fide public course players since Jan. 1 of the current championship year and have not held privileges of any course that does not extend playing privileges to the general public or privileges of any private club maintaining its own course and hold a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 4.4.

The 2010 APL Championship will be played at Bryan Park's Champions Course.
