UNCG tied for second after opening round at SoCon Championship
FLORENCE, S.C. - UNC Greensboro shot an opening round 290 to sit in a tie for second place after the opening round at the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship.
Freshman Robert Hoadley led the way for UNCG with an opening round 71 to sit in a tie for sixth place, four shots off the lead. Will Bowman and Ryan Heisey both chipped in with rounds of 72 on Sunday for the Spartans.
Beginning at No. 10, Hoadley began his day with birdies on Nos. 10 and 12. He was two-under with two holes to play and had a chance to make a run for the clubhouse lead. But a double-bogey at No. 8 knocked him back to even-par on the day. He followed that with a birdie at No. 9 to close out the round.
Furman leads the field after an opening round 280. The Paladins got a 67 from individual leader Daniel Bowden and a 69 by Garland Ferrell, who sits in second place. Georgia Southern, UNCG and Appalachian State are all tied for second, 10 shots behind the Paladins.
The second round will get underway with tee times off of Nos. 1 and 10 beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday. UNCG will begin play off of No. 1 beginning with the 9:50 a.m. grouping.
