Heisey birdies five of his last six to pull into contention, give UNCG solid second
FLORENCE, S.C. - UNC Greensboro's Ryan Heisey birdied five of the final six holes on Monday to close out his round of 67 and pull into contention entering Tuesday's final round at the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship.
Heisey, a senior from New Bern, N.C. is now third, two shots out of the lead, entering the final round after the low score of his career. He sits at 139, trailing the Furman duo of Austin Reeves and Garland Ferrell. Reeves shot the low round of the day with a 66, while Ferrell's round of 68 pulled him into a tie with his teammate.
UNCG's round of 280 on Monday was its lowest score at a SoCon Championship since the 2001 tournament's final round at Chattanooga Golf and Country Club. The Spartans are in second place in the team standings, 11 shots behind Furman and six shots ahead of Georgia Southern, who it began the day tied with.
Colin Chapman carded a round of 69 to help the Spartan to that round of 280, bouncing back from a 76 on Sunday to move up to 14th place. Will Bowman and Robert Hoadley are both in the Top 10 individually, tied for ninth after Bowman's second consecutive 72 and Hoadley's round of 73.
The Spartans, which have only finished in the Top 3 at the conference championship once since joining the SoCon - that coming with a second-place tie in 2004, will begin play in the 8:50 a.m. group off of No. 1 tee Tuesday.
