UNCG tees it up Sunday in Minnesota to open 2010-11 men's golf season

WAYZATA, Minn. – UNCG men's golfers begin the 2010-11 season on Sunday when they begin play at the Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota at Spring Hill Golf Club.

 

The Spartans are opening the season at the tournament for the second consecutive year. The 11-team field will play 36 holes on Sunday and 18 on Monday. UNCG joins Arkansas, Charlotte, Iowa, Kent State, Lamar, LSU, Marquette, tournament host Minnesota, SMU and Wisconsin in the tournament.

 

UNCG returns six players from last year's roster, led by sophomore Robert Hoadley. Hoadley earned all-conference and all-freshman honors last season. He was UNCG's leader in stroke average last season at 73.03, which was good for ninth best in the Southern Conference. He had two top-10 finishes, including a win at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. He had four Top-20 finishes, including a season-low 54-hole total of 212 to finish 20th at the Administaff ASU Intercollegiate.

The Spartans will also look to sophomores Justin Clement and Matt Younts, who is coming off an outstanding summer, including a trip to the U.S. Amateur championship last month. UNCG also will gain the services of standout freshman Andy Knox, who was ranked as one of the top junior golfers in the country according to Golfweek.

 

In Sunday's shotgun start at 8:15 a.m., the Spartans will begin on holes 14 through 18.
