Hoadley leads Spartans to tie for fifth after two rounds at VCU Shootout
RICHMOND, Va. – Robert Hoadley's steady day with rounds of 71 and 70 led the way for UNCG on the opening day of the Verizon Wireless VCU Shootout, putting the Spartans in a tie for fifth place entering Tuesday's final round.
The Spartans carded rounds of 287 and 296 to sit at 583, tied with Charlotte for fifth place. UNC Wilmington leads the team standings after a blistering afternoon round of 276 to sit at 564 entering the final round. East Carolina is second, seven shots back, followed by Richmond and Wake Forest in a tie for third.
Iowa State's Nate McCoy and East Carolina's Harold Vamer are tied for the individual lead, sitting at 137. UNCW's Thomas Bass is two shots back. Hoadley is in a three-way tie for fifth, four shots back.
Hoadley, a sophomore from Southern Pines, N.C., began his day on No. 10 in the shotgun format. He played the back side of the course in 36 one birdie and one bogey to begin the day. He then played his second nine – the front side – in one-under par. In the afternoon, he played the back in 36 again, but three birdies against just one bogey in his final nine holes put him at two-under for the round and three-under for the tournament.
Justin Clement was tied for the lead after the opening round. He shot a 68 in the morning, but dropped from the leaders after three consecutive bogeys early in his second round. He finished the afternoon round with a 75 and is tied for 12th place, six shots off the lead.
Tuesday's final round is slated for an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start, weather permitting.
