UNCG joins top-notch field at Gary Koch Invitational
TAMPA, Fla. – The UNCG men's golf team returns to action on Saturday to begin its second tournament in the last six days, playing in the Gary Hock Invitational at Old Memorial Golf Club.
The tournament is co-hosted by Auburn and Kentucky and will feature 12 teams. Along with No. 15-ranked Auburn and Kentucky, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, No. 18-ranked Florida State, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina, UNCG , North Florida, South Florida and No. 25-ranked Virginia will take part in the tournament.
The Spartans are currently No. 27 in the Golfweek /Sagarin ratings. Auburn is No. 20, College of Charleston is No. 41 and Florida State is No. 41.
UNCG is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Verizon Wireless VCU Shootout on Tuesday. Sophomore Robert Hoadley shot a final round 68 on Tuesday to finish second at seven-under par 209 to lead UNCG. Hoadley bounced back after a rocky tournament to open the season two weeks earlier in Minnesota, where he shot 76-74-82=232 to finish tied for 33rd place.
The Spartans shot 288 as a team on Tuesday to finish at 871, nine shots behind team champion UNC Wilmington. The Seahawks squandered a seven-shot lead, but held on for a one-shot win over Wake Forest. East Carolina was third, six shots back, followed by Richmond and UNCG.
The teams will place two rounds on Saturday and a third round on Sunday. The Spartans will go off of No. 10 tee beginning at 8:40 a.m. for the opening round and approximately 1:35 p.m. for the second round.
