DURHAM, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf team begins play on Sunday at the Rod Meyers Invitational, being play at The Duke Golf Club.
The Spartans will join host Duke, Charlotte, ETSU, Iowa, Michigan, Middle Tennessee State, Minnesota, North Carolina, Rice, Tulsa and VCU in the 12-team field. Duke is ranked No. 16 in the Golf World poll, while Iowa is No. 19.
The tournament opens on Sunday, Oct. 10 with a 9 am shotgun start. Teams will play a continuous 36 holes on the opening day before an 18-hole final round on Monday. Monday's action begins with tee times starting at 8 am.
The Duke University Golf Club, opened in 1957 and ranked among the top on-campus facilities in the NCAA, will play as a 7,136 yard, par 72 for the event. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones and redesigned by Jones' son, Rees, in 1994. The Duke University Golf Club, considered one of the top 10 courses in North Carolina, was the host site of the 1962 and 2001 NCAA Championships.
UNCG is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate. Andy Knox carded a final round 67 for the low round of the day amongst 66 players, which helped to give UNCG three players in the top 20. Knox, regarded as one of the top freshmen in the country, bounced back from five consecutive difficult rounds to score the best round of the day and finish tied for 19th place. Robert Hoadley tied for 16th and Colin Chapman tied for 19th place to help the Spartans to their second consecutive round of 287. UNCG finished with a team score of 868.
