UNCG alum Andy Bare one step closer to PGA Tour
HUMBLE, Texas – UNCG men's golf alumnus Andy Bare advanced to the final stage of PGA Qualifying School and secured at least a bid on the Nationwide Tour next season with his play at Redstone Golf Club this weekend.
Bare, who made it to the second stage of Q-school last season, shot 285 over the 72-hole event to finish eighth. He bounced back from an opening round 75 to shoot 68 in the second round and 69 in the third round to position himself for a good chance to advance. With 19 players plus ties advancing to the finals, Bare carded a final round 73 to be among 20 players to qualify at the Redstone site.
Bare, 29, played on the eGolf Tour (formerly Tarheel Tour) for most of last season and has done so for a good portion of the last few years. He qualified for and played in the 2006 U.S. Open and the 2007 Wyndham Championship at Forest Oaks CC, currently the home of the UNCG men's golf team. At the Wyndham, after winning a Monday qualifier, he recorded a top-20 finish. He has played part-time on the Nationwide Tour since then.
Depending on his finish in the final stage of Q-school, Bare could earn a full-time spot on the Nationwide Tour or possibly his PGA Tour card. Bare was a two-time All-Southern Conference honoree at UNCG, graduating in 2004.
The final stage will be played Dec. 1-6 at Orange County National in Winter Garden, Fla. That stage consists of six rounds with the top 25 players earning a spot on the PGA tour. The Golf Channel will have live coverage of the final three days of action.
