MADISON, Miss. – Junior Colin Chapman put together consecutive sub-par rounds for the second time in his two-year UNCG career as the Spartans finished tied for ninth in the 15-team, weather-shortened BancorpSouth Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
Chapman, who transferred to UNCG after beginning his college career at Oglethorpe (Ga.) College, followed Monday's 1-under-par 71 with a 70 and finished in a fifth-place tie among the 75 individuals in the event. The standing is his best for the Spartans, eclipsing a pair of sixth-place efforts last spring. He broke par in consecutive rounds for the first time since he strung together three scores of 69 at last year's Puerto Rico tournament.
The 15 teams were scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday and 18 Tuesday, but tornadoes in the area suspended play on Monday and ultimately wiped out the planned third round. Competition resumed Tuesday morning and concluded with the completion of the second 18 holes at the 7,400-yard layout at Reunion Golf and Country Club.
Although a second-round score of 295 dropped them from fifth to ninth, the Spartans still registered their best head-to-head win over a single opponent this spring when they bested Vanderbilt. UNCG began the tournament at 82nd in the golfstat.com national rankings, while the Commodores were 72nd. The Spartans' previous on-paper result came in Puerto Rico, where they defeated East Tennessee State, now 80th. UNCG also played 69th-ranked Memphis to a draw this week.
In addition to Chapman's effort, the Spartans received another solid performance from Kyle Sonday, whose consecutive 74s put him in a 35th-place tie with Knox, among others.
