Chapman qualifies for U.S. Amateur Championship
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG golfer Colin Chapman shot a final round 74 and survived a one-hole playoff to qualify for the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship during sectional qualifyin,g Wednesday at Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C.
Chapman finished in a three-way tie for second place after shooting 3-under par 139 (65-74) during the two-day, two-round qualifying.
A rising senior at UNCG, Chapman finished four strokes behind medalist Michael Cromie of Cary. Chapman then claimed one of the two remaining positions with a par on the playoff hole.
Fellow Spartan Kyle Sonday was primed to advance after opening qualifying play with a 69 on Tuesday, but a 74 on Wednesday dashed his hopes. Sonday finished at 1-over (143), four strokes out of the mix.
The U.S. Amateur will be played at Erin Hills in Erin, Wash., from Aug. 22-28.
