Stamey completes first round of play at Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Former UNCG golfer Nathan Stamey shot a 4-over par 74 during the opening round of the PGA Wyndham Championship, Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club.
Americans Tommy Gainey and Jeff Quinney are tied atop the leaderboard at 7-under par 63.
Stamey, who made the field after winning the Monday qualifier at Forest Oaks Country Club, started his round strong on Thursday, making the turn at even par. But things quickly came apart for Stamey on the back nine.
A bogey on the par-4 10th pushed him to 1-over. After pars on 11 and 12, Stamey bogeyed three of the next four holes to drop his score to 4-over.
Stamey salvaged his round by paring the 17th and 18th holes to finish his first PGA Tour round at 74. He enjoyed only one birdie – on the par-5 fifth hole – and recorded 12 pars.
Tournament play continues on Friday. Stamey is scheduled to tee off at approximately 1:40 p.m.
