Men’s Golf ninth after two rounds at VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. — UNCG men's golf team is ninth after shooting 1-over par 577 (280-297) during the first two rounds of the VCU Shootout, Monday at Hermitage Country Club.

Playing in their first tournament of the fall, the Spartans trail team leader Virginia (559) by 18 strokes. Rounding out the top 10 in the 15-team field are Virginia Tech (562), East Carolina (563), Iowa State (564), Wichita State (566), Wake Forest and North Carolina (571), Charlotte (573), UNCG, and Maryland (579).

Iowa State's Scott Fernandez owns the individual lead at 9-under par (135). UNCG freshman Roy Dixon is tied for 11th at 3-under par 141 (68-73).

The Spartans enjoyed a strong morning session, finishing the first 18 holes tied for the overall team lead. But UNCG struggled during the afternoon round, shooting nine over par over the second 18 holes.

UNCG's Colin Chapman is tied for 18th at 1-under 143 (71-72), while Alex Simmons is tied for 28th at even par 144 (70-74).

Spartan freshman Alex Ehlert (70-77) and teammate Andy Knox (71-76) are tied for 52nd at 147.

The third and final round of tournament play begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
