UNCG fifth after one round at rain-shortened Bridgestone

GREENSBORO, N.C. — UNCG shot an opening-round 296 and is in fifth place at the rain-shortened Bridgestone Golf Collegiate, Saturday at Forest Oaks Country Club.

Originally scheduled for 54 holes, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes after persistent rains and unseasonably cool temperatures made their way into Greensboro on Friday and into Saturday morning.

South Carolina leads the 15-team field by three strokes after shooting 291 on Saturday. North Carolina and Virginia Tech (294) are tied for second, with Mississippi State (295) and UNCG rounding out the top five teams.

North Carolina's Patrick Barrett and NC State's Albin Choi are tied for the individual lead at 2-under par 70.

UNCG's Andy Knox is one of six players tied for third at 1-under 71.

Fellow Spartans Robert Hoadley and Will Almand are tied for 20th at 2-over par 74.  Colin Chapman is tied for 60th at 77, while Alex Ehlert is tied for 68th at 78.

Three Spartans played as individuals. Roy Dixon is tied for 20th with Hoadley and Almand, while Alex Simmons is tied for 75th after shooting 80. Matt Younts shot 89 and is in 85th.

The second and final round is scheduled for a 10 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday. The public is welcome to attend and there is no admission charge.
