Student-Athlete Day feature: Men's golfer Robert Hoadley
In honor of National Student-Athlete Day on Friday,
UNCGSpartans.com has featured a student-athlete each day leading up
to this date, acknowledging their commitment to excellence on and
off the field of play.
National Student-Athlete Day recognizes the accomplishments of
student-athletes nationwide who excel in the classroom, on the
playing fields and in their communities. The day was created by the
National Consortium for Academics and Sports and the Northeastern
University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with
partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High
School Associations.
Friday's final feature is on UNCG men's golfer Robert
Hoadley, a junior from Southern Pines, N.C.
Q: What made you decide to attend UNCG?
A: I was always heavily recruited by coach (Terrance) Stewart
early on in my high school career. I came up for a number of visits
and once I stood on this campus, I knew this was where I wanted to
spend my four years. Greensboro is just the right distance from my
home in Pinehurst. Also having every guy on our team roster from
North Carolina adds a unique feature and it really creates a family
environment, which I really like.
Q: What has been your favorite moment as a
student-athlete?
A: I would say Georgetown. When I was in high school, our golf
team was competitive in the conference we were in but we never
quite got over the hump and seized a victory as a team. But being
at UNCG and finally getting that team win and being able to
celebrate with all my teammates all the way home – now,
that's a feeling I'll never forget.
Q: What is the greatest lesson that you've learned from
being a student-athlete?
A: So far while being a student-athlete, I have realized you're a
role model, and no matter what, there is someone looking up to you.
Working with the First Tee of the Triad, I have realized it's
important to portray yourself in the best manner.
Q: Who has been the most influential person in your
athletic career?
A: I would say the most influential person in my athletic career
has been our assistant coach, Dr. Bob Christina, better known as
"Doc." He has taught me a number of different lessons on and off
the golf course and has always been there for me when I have a need
or problem.
Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: I have a number of different plans for graduation. My ultimate
dream has always been to play professional golf and compete on
tour. It is extremely competitive and difficult to get to that
level, which is why I am planning on receiving a degree in
marketing. I would love to stay in the golf industry using my
marketing degree.
Q: What do you do to get a ready for a round of
golf?
A: I don't really have any specific routine prior to getting to
the golf course, but I do like to arrive to the golf course about
an hour before my tee time. I normally putt on the putting green
first for roughly 10 minutes, then head over to the driving range
and warm up, and finally head back to the putting green and roll a
few more putts until my tee time arrives. As I walk to the tee box,
I set a goal of how many birdies I am going to make in the
round.
Q: Do you think coming to UNCG and being a part of the
men's golf team has better equipped you for your
future?
A: I believe that being on this golf team has better equipped me
for life. I have learned time management skills, how to set goals
for myself, how to work well with others, and how I can make a
difference in the community.
Q: What is the best piece of advice you have
received?
A: "Find a positive in everything you do." "Great champions never
give up."
