Spartan finish 11th at SoCon, Ehlert named All-Freshman
DANIEL ISLAND. S.C. – Despite its best round of the tournament Tuesday, the UNCG men's golf team could not move up in the standings of the Southern Conference Championship at the Ralston Creek Course, finishing the three-day tournament in 11th. Kyle Sonday shot an even-par 72 to pace the Spartans on the final day of the tournament, while Alex Ehlert was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team at the conclusion of the event.
UNCG shot 917 for the tournament (308-311-298) to finish three shots back of Western Carolina.
Sonday's total score of 225 (77-75-72) tied him for 25th place. Ehlert finished tied for 36th overall with a three-day total of 229 (77-75-77).
Senior Will Almand moved up two spots on day three. He shot a final-round of 76 for a score of 232 (77-79-76).
Robert Hoadley and Roy Dixon each shot final-round scores of 75, tying them for 45th and 47th, respectively. Hoadley finished with a total of 233 (77-81-75), while Dixon was just one shot back at 234 (77-82-75).
Tuesday, Chattanooga built on the lead it gained in round two, recording a 281 for a tournament team total of 861. The Mocs beat defending champion Georgia Southern by 19 strokes, the largest margin of victory at the tournament since 2001.
Chattanooga's Stephan Jaeger didn't let up, building on his individual lead in the final round by shooting a 2-under par 69 for a total of 207 (66-72-69). Jaeger beat runner-up Brandon Hudson of Wofford by 11 shots, matching the tournament record for margin of victory.
