Campbell's OT goal lifts UNCG over Davidson, 3-2
DAVIDSON, NC – Mike Richardson had a hand in all three UNCG goals, including the assist on Thomas Campbell’s game-winner with 17 seconds left in the first overtime, as the Spartans topped Davidson, 3-2, in Southern Conference men’s soccer action on Tuesday night.
UNCG (6-4-1, 1-0-1) was awarded a corner kick with 45 seconds to play. Richardson set the ball up and lofted it into the box, where Campbell headed it home for his third goal of the season. Campbell, a sophomore from Middletown, NJ, also had a goal and an assist in UNCG’s win over Coastal Carolina last Friday night.
Richardson now has 11 points on the season, logging three goals and five assists thus far this season.
After a scoreless first 60 minutes, the last 40 were wild. Machel Turner scored first to give Davidson (4-7-0, 0-2-0) a 1-0 lead at 61:29. A.J. Grant flicked the ball into the box and Turner beat the keeper one-on-one for his second goal of the season.
But Richardson, a senior from Dobson, NC, tied the game a little over five minutes later. Michael FitzGerald played a through ball and Richardson hit a chip shot from the left side of the goal for his third tally of the season and a 1-1 tie at 66:52.
The Spartans then gained the lead on All-American Randi Patterson’s seventh goal of the season. Richardson began the play with a corner kick. Patterson then played the ball of his chest and into the goal to give UNCG a 2-1 lead at with just 7:51 left in regulation.
Grant, however, tied it for Davidson with just 2:54 left on the clock. Charlie Reiter put the ball back into play with a free kick from 40 yards out. Grant got a head on it and it found its way into the goal for his first goal of the year. That forced overtime and set the stage for Campbell’s heroics.
The Spartans held a 20-10 advantage in shots, including 16-6 after halftime. Robby Goldsberry had six saves for Davidson, which lost its fourth straight match, including three in a row by one goal. Nate Berry had one save for UNCG.
UNCG returns to action on Saturday night when it hosts rival Elon for Homecoming beginning at 7 pm.
