Four Spartans earn All-SoCon honors

SPARTANBURG, SC – Four UNC Greensboro players were honored when the Southern Conference announced the all-conference first and second teams Friday afternoon.

Forward Thomas Campbell, midfielder Jokull Elisabetarson and defender D.J. McCurry were named to first team all-conference, while defender David Worthen was named to the second team.

Campbell, a junior from Middletown, NJ, leads the Spartans in scoring this season with 23 points this season on 10 goals and three assists. He recorded 18 points (8g, 2a) in conference play, including three matches of five or more points.

Elisabetarson, a junior from Iceland, is second on the team in scoring with 15 points. He has six goals and three assists, with four of his goals coming directly off penalty kicks and a fifth coming on a rebound. More importantly, Elisabetarson is dominant in the midfield, settling the defense and subtly jumpstarting the Spartan offense.

McCurry and Worthen have been the cornerstones of the Spartan defense for the last few years. McCurry, a senior from Gastonia, NC, earned first-team honors after having earned second-team honors two years ago. He has started all 18 games this season on the Spartan defense. Worthen, a senior from Morehead City, NC, earned all-conference honors for his fourth straight year, having earned first-team honors.

Furman, which has been ranked in the national Top 25 for most of the season, swept the three major awards. Jon Leathers was named the Player of the Year, with Freshman of the Year honors going to Haris Cekic. Furman coach Doug Allison was named the Coach of the Year.

UNCG opens the SoCon Tournament on Saturday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The third-seeded Spartans (9-7-2) play host to sixth-seeded Davidson at 7 pm.
