No. 1 Wake Forest tops UNCG, 6-0
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Cody Arnoux had a pair of goals and an assist to lead top-ranked Wake Forest to its 18th-consecutive win, a 6-0 shutout of UNC Greensboro at Spry Stadium on Wednesday night.
The win was the 200th for Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich and the Deacons' 27th straight at home. In his 15th season, Vidovich is now 200-87-15 as a head coach.
The Deacons, who have now scored 23 goals in their last five matches, scored quickly on Wednesday to try to snuff out any upset ideas UNCG might have had. Ike Opara got a head on Jamie Franks' corner kick 9:24 into the match for his fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. Arnoux followed with a shot from 17 yards out just 2:26 later and Wake Forest had a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans (5-8-1) looked like they had minimized the damage from that point, but Zack Schilawski scored just before the intermission. With just 53 seconds remaining in the opening half, Schilawski scored off a deflection to give Wake Forest a 3-0 lead at the break.
Arnoux then assisted on Sam Cronin's goal at 58:50 and added another at 61:51 to complete his five-point night.
Wake Forest outshot UNCG, 28-7, and had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Spartans return to Southern Conference play on Saturday when they visit College of Charleston for a key league match-up.
