BOONE, N.C. - J.J. Elder scored with 2:39 remaining in the first overtime period to lift Appalachian State to a 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro in men's soccer action Tuesday night.
The Spartans, who had won their last two matches, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Matt Foxx scored just 14:16 into the match. Cruz Oronos had a shot off a free kick, which rebounded to Foxx. He beat Appalachian State goalkeeper Collin Taylor to the right for his fourth goal of the season and an early 1-0 lead.
But the Mountaineers came back and tied it just 2:22 later. Sean Dreybus headed in a cross by Arie Muniz for his third goal of the season to make it a 1-1 match.
The score stayed that way until the 98th minute. Steven Sassano started the play, striking a corner kick long past the goal to the opposite post. Ryan Duffy headed the ball back toward the middle, where Elder was able to head the ball home for the golden goal. It was his fourth tally of the game-winner.
Taylor had four saves for the Mountaineers (5-8-1, 2-4-0). UNCG goalkeeper Peyton Ford was the tough-luck loser, making 10 saves for the Spartans. Ford leads the Southern Conference in saves this season with 84.
UNCG (5-8-3, 2-2-1), which needs at least a win and a tie and possibly two wins in their final two conference matches to make the conference tournament, will play host to Davidson on Saturday for senior night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Following the game, there will be a special showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show on the UNCG Soccer Stadium video board for Halloween night.
