Justin Maullin talks about the UNCP match
GREENSBORO, N.C. — UNCG men's soccer hosts UNC Pembroke in the Spartans' final exhibition game, 7 p.m., Saturday, at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans opened exhibition play last Tuesday with a 0-0 result at NC State. Goalkeepers Peyton Ford and Davis Griffin combined for four saves to help UNCG's defense post a shutout.
The Spartans (7) and Wolfpack (12) combined for 19 total shots in the game, with nine coming on goal. Junior Hakan Ilhan and sophomore Oddur Gudmundsson led UNCG with three shots apiece.
Led by second-year head coach Justin Maullin, the Spartans return eight starters and 14 letter winners from last season's 12-6-4 squad which captured Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles and made the program's 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in 20 years.
UNCP was 5-9-4 overall a season ago and posted a 1-5-2 mark in the NCAA Division II Peach Belt Athletic Conference. The Braves are coached Phil Hindson, a former college teammate of Maullin's at William Carey in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The Spartans open the 2011 regular season when they host preseason No. 23 Duke, 8 p.m., Friday, August 26 at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
