WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—William & Mary scored once in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over UNCG, Tuesday at Martin Family Stadium. The loss was the Spartans' third straight.
With UNCG's Davis Griffin making his first career start in goal, the Tribe (4-3-0) didn't score its first goal until the 38th minute. Nicolas Abrigo took a long pass from Will Smith and broke free of the defense for his fourth goal of the season and 1-0 advantage.
Ben Anderson gave William & Mary a 2-0 advantage in the 57th minute when his shot sneaked past Griffin after UNCG's defense failed to clear a loose ball. Patrick O'Brien was credited with the assist.
UNCG (2-4-0) was limited to just 10 shots for the match, and only three were on goal. The Spartans mustered just two shots in the final 33 minutes, both coming with less than five minutes remaining. But the Tribe defense thwarted each effort to hang on for the win.
Fannar Arnarsson led the Spartans with five shots while Hakan Ilhan and Oddur Gudmundsson had two each.
Davis made three saves in his first career start.
The Spartans return to action when they host Gardner-Webb, 7 p.m., Saturday, at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
