Men's Soccer Hosts No. 23 NC State Friday In Home-Opener
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After four straight road games to open the 2012 regular season, the UNCG men's soccer team holds its home-opener Friday as the Spartans host No. 23 NC State at 8 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The first 500 fans attending the game will receive Mellow Mushroom mystery gift cards while a free fireworks show will follow the game.
Senior forward Hakan Ilhan (Stuttgart, Germany/Univ. of Stuttgart) is second on the team with three goals, all of which have come in the past two games. Junior defender Maximilian Schulz (Northeim, Germany/Gymnasium Corvinianum) also leads the SoCon in a statistical category, pacing the team with four assists.
Friday's game marks the 42nd home opener in UNCG men's soccer history with the Spartans owning a 26-10-5 mark all-time. The Spartans are unbeaten in their last three home openers, including a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Duke in last year's opener. UNCG and NC State have met nine times prior to Friday's game with the Spartans holding a 5-4-0 record, including wins in five out of the last six meetings. This year's contest will be the first meeting between the teams since the 2003 season.
NC State enters Friday's game with a perfect 4-0-0 record as the Wolfpack have picked up wins over Liberty, Mercer, Delaware and Santa Clara. NC State is led by junior Nazmi Albadawi who has scored two goals and handed out two assists this season after leading the team with nine goals last fall. Junior Alex Martinez has a team-high eight points on the strength of two goals and four assists in his first year after transferring from High Point.
