Men's Soccer Opens SoCon Play Tuesday Night At Davidson

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's soccer team opens Southern Conference play Tuesday night as it travels to Davidson for the conference opener. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Alumni Soccer Stadium with links to live stats and video on www.uncgspartans.com, courtesy of Davidson.

Tuesday's game marks the 16th Southern Conference opener in UNCG men's soccer history. The Spartans own a 6-7-2 record in league openers dating back to their inaugural season in 1997. UNCG and Davidson have met four times in SoCon openers with the Spartans winning in 1999 and the Wildcats picking up wins in 1997, 2001 and most recently in 2008. Last year, the Spartans opened league play with a 2-0 victory over Furman in Greensboro. Forward Hakan Ilhan (Stuttgart, Germany/Univ. of Stuttgart) scored the game-winning goal while Austin Miller (High Point, N.C./High Point Central) tallied the second goal to lead the Spartans to victory.
 
The game marks the 26th meeting all-time between UNCG and Davidson with the Spartans holding a 16-7-2 advantage in the series. The two teams have tied the last two meetings with a scoreless draw last year in Greensboro and a 2-2 stalemate in 2010 in Davidson. The Spartans are 4-1-2 in the last seven meetings against the Wildcats.
 
UNCG enters Tuesday's game with a 2-4-2 overall record. The Spartans have played three nationally ranked teams in their last four games with losses to No. 17 Coastal Carolina and No. NC State, while tying No. 4 Charlotte
 
Ilhan leads the team and ranks fourth in the league in scoring with 11 points as he has scored five goals and handed out an assist. Junior Oddur Gudmundsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) is second on the team with eight points, having scored four goals. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Peyton Ford (Jamestown, N.C./Southwest Guilford) has played 694:42 in goal and owns a 1.81 goals against average.

Davidson enters the game with a 4-2-1 overall record as the Wildcats have won four straight games against Richmond, USC Upstate, East Tennessee State and most recently at Presbyterian. Valeriey Sviderskly leads the Wildcats in scoring with four goals while Andrew Dilallo is second on the team with three goals and two assists. Matt Pacifici has played 626:39 in goal and owns a 1.58 goals against average.
