GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG men's tennis coach Thomas Mozur announced Tuesday his squad's schedule for the upcoming 2010-11 season, featuring a fall tournament at home for the second straight year and 10 spring season dual matches at home.
Coming off of their first-ever NCAA Championship bid last season, the Spartans will open the fall portion of the 2010-11 slate hosting the UNCG Fall Invitational for the second consecutive year. This year's tourney will take place Sept. 10-12 on the newly resurfaced UNCG Tennis Courts.
That will be the first of five fall tournaments UNCG will play. The Spartans will play on four consecutive weekends in October, hitting the road to Chattanooga and Elon for those invitationals, then playing in the ITA Regional in Chapel Hill, N.C., before closing out the fall schedule at UNC Wilmington's tournament Oct. 22-24.
The defending SoCon tournament champions will open for the second straight year at the Starmount Forest Country Club Indoor Courts. UNCG will face Winthrop on Jan. 22 to open the dual match portion of the schedule. That is the first of 10 homes matches for the Spartans in the spring 2011 slate. UNCG is slated to go outdoors on the new UNCG Tennis Courts on Feb. 18 when it hosts Campbell for a 2 p.m. match.
UNCG opens conference play during spring break again this season, hosting Wofford on March 5. The rematch of the 2010 SoCon Tournament title match will also be at UNCG Tennis Courts on April 6 when Elon visits in the home finale.
The SoCon Men's and Women's Tennis Championships will return to an eight-team format this season and will change venues, moving to Chattanooga, Tenn. The 2011 championship will be played April 20-23.
The Spartans return five players from last year's 17-6 squad, including two-time All-SoCon selection Orcun Seyrek. Seyrek, now a junior, set a school record with 28 wins last season, including a 19-3 mark in the spring dual-match season. Timion Meijs also returns after winning 24 of 33 matches in his freshman season, including a 16-5 mark in the spring.
