Meijs, Seyrek lead way as five Spartans advance to semifinals
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Timon Meijs and Orcun Seyrek both advanced to the semifinal round in flight A1 singles to lead the list of five Spartans earning spots in Saturday's semifinal round at the UNCG Men's Tennis Fall Intercollegiate on Friday.
Meijs won twice in his flight, while top-seeded Orcun Seyrek won his quarterfinal match. Meijs topped fourth-seeded Renato Antun from Belmont, 6-1 and 6-2, to begin the day. He followed that with a three-set thriller over Kennesaw State's Gianni Kubin, 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, to move into Saturday's semifinal round against Cody Stauffer-MacDowell from Elon.
Yaroslav Litus, seeded fourth in Flight A2, won twice in straight sets to earn a spot in Saturday's semifinal round. A pair of Spartan freshman were impressive in Flight A3 as Chanon Varapongsittikul and Ahmet Sarioglu both won twice to move into the semifinal round in their flight. Varapongsittikul rallied from down a set in his quarterfinal match to advance. He lost the first set to second-seeded Jackson Tresnan of Chattanooga, 7-5, but bounced back to win the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-0.
In first round doubles action, UNCG's Litus and Jacob Wright advanced, as did Timion Meijs and Zach Reece in Flight B.
Action resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday with quarterfinal round matches in doubles play.
