Double duo takes flight championship at UNCG Fall Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's doubles team of Chanon Varapongsittikul and Randy Phillips won the B doubles flight championship and Ahmet Sarioglu won the A1 singles consolation bracket as the Spartans wrapped up play at the UNCG Fall Invitational on Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
Varapongsittikul and Phillips downed Campbell's Garrison Kinney and Ondrej Kralik 8-5 to claim the B flight doubles title. Sarioglu dropped Virginia Tech's Trpimir Kujundzic, the top seed in the A1 singles bracket, 7-6 (3), 7-5 to take the consolation title.
In other singles action, UNCG's top-seeded Jimmy Roueche fell to Liberty's Wayne Harrell 7-5; 7-6 (3) in the final of the A4 bracket, while Orcun Seyrek dropped the third-place match in the A1 main draw to Campbell's Fernando Guillen, 6-4, 6-3.
Varapongsittikul suffered the same fate in the third-place contest in the A2 singles bracket, falling to top-seeded Zachary Pine of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-1.
Phillips, playing in the consolation final of the A3 bracket, fell 6-4, 6-3 to Liberty's Dillon Segur.
In doubles play, Sarioglu and Seyrek topped Elon's Thomas Darling and Andrew Prince 9-8 (4) in the A doubles consolation semifinals. The consolation final was not played due to travel considerations for the tournament.
The Spartans return to action at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.
