Charlotte downs UNCG on Friday, 4-3
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG dropped just its second home match in its last 27 tries Friday, falling to Charlotte by a 4-3 count at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans (2-4) are now 25-2 in their last 27 at home, including indoor matches at Starmount Forest Country Club and Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. At the UNCG Tennis Courts, UNCG is now 18-2 in the stretch, which dates back to the 2009 season.
The 49ers (5-2) earned a pair of comeback wins at the bottom of the order to rally for the victory. With UNCG nursing a 3-2 lead, Charlotte's Nos. 5 and 6 singles players overcame first-set losses to doom the Spartans.
Nate Shanok pulled Charlotte level with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) win over Jimmy Roueche at No. 6 and Anthony Davison clinched the match for the 49ers with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Cameron Smith at No. 5.
The 49ers jumped out to the 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. UNCG's Randy Phillips and Chanon Varapongsittikul breezed to an 8-1 win over Kamil Khalil and Krzysztof Kwasniewicz at No. 2 doubles, but Charlotte drew even when Alex Calott and Jack Williams topped Orcun Seyrek and Ahmet Sarioglu at No. 1, 8-5. The 49ers clinched the point at No. 3, where Paul Cisti and Davison took an 8-4 win over Smith and Roueche.
In singles play, Sarioglu finished first, downing Calott 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. Kamil Khalil put Charlotte back on top with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Varapongsittikul at No. 3, but Phillips topped Cisti 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 to make it a 2-2 match.
Seyrek earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Williams at No. 1 to put UNCG on top for the first time on the day before Charlotte pulled out the win.
UNCG hosts Belmont at the UNCG Tennis Courts on Friday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m.
