Men's Tennis Conclude Winthrop Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey / METU Development Foundation) won in the final consolation round of the division two singles flight, 7-5, 6-1 against Winthrop's Steven Patrick Sunday, at the Winthrop Fall Invitational.
"The guys really stepped up today," said assistant coach Brett Bernstein. "Everyone had tough matches which was good because it tested us and gave me a chance to see how the guys would handle the challenge. In a long tournament like this the last day is mentally tough. Everyone is tired and wants to go home. When our guys took the court they were focused and I could tell they wanted to get the win."
Freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla. / Lakeland) picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win in the division one singles consolation round against Nikita Zverkov from Gardner-Webb.
Sophomore Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C. / Ragsdale) beat Andrew Brigham from Presbyterian College, 6-4, 6-1 in the consolation round of division two singles.
In doubles play, Sarioglu teamed up with Mack to win 9-8 against Campbell's Billington and Van Gerwen in consolation.
UNCG will return to action January 25 at the Army Challenge in West Point, NY, to kick off the 2013 spring season.
