WEST POINT, N.Y. – UNCG's men's tennis program started its 2013 spring season strong on day one of the Army Challenge, Friday, Jan. 25, in West Point, N.Y. 

"We played well in doubles tonight winning four out of three matches," said head coach Thomas Mozur. I felt like we had too many singles atches where we helped our opponents out too much. We need to finish sets and matches in singles when we have the momentum." 

The Spartans took on Marist in singles winning four out of seven matches. 

Junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey / METU Development Foundation) defeated Trym Nagelstad, 6-4, 6-1, while freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) won 6-1, 6-3 against Lorenzo Rossi. 

Sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) fought hard in a three-set match, but dropped the third-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) to Dalen Klassen. Classmate Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C. / Ragsdale) fell 7-5, 6-2 to Joris Van Eck. 

Freshman Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista) picked up an easy 7-5, 6-0 victory against Will Reznek, while fellow classmate William Albright (Greensboro, N.C. / Grimsley) beat Billy Bishop, 6-4, 6-3. 

Freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla. / Lakeland) dueled Joe Dube, but lost 7-5, 6-0. 

UNCG won three of four doubles matches against Army.

Phillips and Dougherty teamed up to beat Shelton and McCasin, 8-3, while Sarioglu and Mack took down Army's Isoh and McCormick with the same score. 

Albright and junior Jimmy Roueche (Greensboro, N.C. / Grimsley) lost in a tiebreaker, 8-6 (8-6) to H. Jang-Milsten and Sienko. Murray and Smith won 8-4 against S. Jang-Miltsen and Proctor. 

Play at the Army Challenge will continue tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center, at 9 a.m.
