Men's Tennis Hosts Richmond; Cancels Road Match
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis program canceled its match against UNC Charlotte, Saturday, Feb. 16, due to weather. The teams are now scheduled to play, April 9. The Spartans will host Richmond Sunday, Feb. 17, at 9 a.m. at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
"The guys are prepared and ready to battle the Spiders," said head coach Thomas Mozur. "This will be another good test for us."
The Spartans hold a 2-0 record after beating Campbell, 4-3, last week. UNCG won two out three doubles matches and three of six singles matches.
Junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey / METU Development Foundation) fell to Guillen, 6-2, 6-1, while freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) fought to win a close 7-5, 7-6 match against Billington.
Freshman Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista) lost in a tough match to Rossignon, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6.
Sohpmore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) picked up a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win against Clavera. Freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla. / Lakeland) fell to Baro, 6-2, 6-4, while sophomore Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C. / Ragsdale) beat Rik Van Gerwen in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Richmond last faced East Carolina when they lost 5-2. The Spiders are currently 3-4 in the spring. The team will take on Lees-McRae Saturday before heading to UNCG.
